Through our Friday morning transition to school class we aim for a balance between what the children want/need; what the Primary school teachers’ expectations of a new-entrant are; and what our community of parents expects from the class.
To prepare the children for the up-coming change in their education, we encourage skills in:
Listening at a group-time situation.
Taking responsibility for the group; including waiting for other children to have a turn talking, listening to their response and if it differs from their point of view, being able to accept that view.
Perseverance; learning to try something new and stick with it even if it is hard. We want them to be able to persist with an activity, cope if the situation changes for any reason and be unfazed by the concept of uncertainty.
Confidence to express a point of view or feeling, knowing they will be listened to.
Taking responsibility for their actions and realising there will be consequences if they step over them. Knowing that there are boundaries is very important for children; they are great at testing them, but will ultimately feel safer with them there.
Noticing their surroundings, being creative and curious and trusting that when they ask or contribute their findings they will be heard.
We want children to have a sense of wonder.
These are the things that are common threads in our Early Childhood Curriculum, and Te Whariki and our Licensing Criteria. These are also skills that will place our children in good stead as they approach school and the many other changes in their lives.
We believe it is important for the children to be interested in the alphabet and numbers, we encourage that. We know that literacy involves many different things for children and that children will develop at different rates. That is why we for example encourage dance and movement as a way to express themselves. Physical activity is a huge part in the children’s ability to begin the process of formal reading and writing.
In a nutshell we want to scaffold the children from where they are at the moment. We want to encourage the children to be the teachers and to help scaffold the interests and skills of the other children, and even the adults.
